FROM DREAM TO
REALITY!
Imagine for a moment
your hand on the regulator of a steam engine - it's a dream that few
of us will realise. However, by arrangement with the Festiniog
Railway Trust, we offer the chance for a limited number of guests to
enjoy the thrill of working on the footplate of a locomotive - with
the ‘Guest Driver Programme’ on the Rheilffordd Ffestiniog Railway.
These days, of course,
there are many variations on the theme - Drive an Engine, Footplate
Experience, Driver Experience… but, there’s nothing better than…
The Ffestiniog
Experience
The ‘Guest Driver
Programme’ offers an experience you’ll never forget, the opportunity
to enjoy the thrill of handling a ‘real’ train on the Rheilffordd
Ffestiniog Railway - run by the oldest Independent Railway Company
in the World - through the spectacular scenery of North Wales
Behind you - the Deep
Blue Sea…
Above you - the Clear
Blue Sky…
Around you - Fresh Mountain Air…
and - the sound of a locomotive working to its limit!
The Rheilffordd
Ffestiniog Railway climbs over 700ft on its 13½ mile journey from
the quayside at Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau
Ffestiniog. Hugging the valley side, it winds past meadows, moors,
lakes, waterfalls and under mountains on its way through the
beautiful Snowdonia National Park.
Originally designed
for gravity operation, the railway provides a real challenge to its
footplate crews. The continuous gradient is only broken when the
line runs over the ‘Deviation’ route between Dduallt and
Tanygrisiau. This section includes the only railway spiral in the
UK, and was built to enable the railway to gain 35ft in height after
the original course was flooded by the lower lake for the UK’s first
pumped-storage power station.
The spectacular
engineering of the Rheilffordd Ffestiniog Railway ensures that its
locomotives are worked hard throughout - definitely an experience to
be savoured!
